Understanding panic and the fear of panic
If you suffer from episodes of panic it is important to know that the symptoms of panic are not dangerous, even though they can seem incredibly frightening, almost as if you are going to have a heart attack and collapse, or even die.
It is also important for you to know that, although you don’t perhaps feel it, you are still completely normal; there is nothing deeply ‘wrong’ with you. You need to know that, like the rest of us, you were born without panic and somewhere along the line you have wound up unconsciously choosing panic as a form of behaviour to cope with stressors in your life. And this also goes for the accompanying fear of anticipating a panic attack, which in itself can mean you wind up avoiding certain people, places and activities and develop a phobia.
Panic is a symptom of anxiety: born out of a sense of impending doom.
Consider the fish
I’m going to use an example from nature and, yes, I know, I’ve just started talking about fish, but bear with me, I know what I’m doing! We all agree you don’t need to have ever caught a fish in a fishing net to know how a fish behaves once it believes there is no escape and that it’s life is threatened. Everyone has seen how a fish wriggles, gasps and flaps inside a net when it has been caught. Basically, the fish is panicking. And it is doing so because this is nature’s way of coping with the feeling of being trapped and the possibility of impending death. In the same way, we humans are a bit like the fish when we feel trapped or sense that there is ‘no way out’, and so we panic too, except with us there is no actual net. We have a perceived net; a sense of an ‘impending net,’ you could say.
It’s my job to help you find out what your ‘net’ is; what it is ‘out there’ that triggers your net; and then to help you remove your net forever.
How do I know if I suffer from panic?
Panic attacks can be terrifying; usually a sudden, gripping feeling of fear or helplessness that can last several minutes, accompanied by physical symptoms such as breathing problems, a pounding or racing heart, tingling or numb hands, sweating, weakness or dizziness, chest pain, stomach pain, and feeling hot or cold. It can feel disorientating afterwards.
Learn to ‘un-choose’ panic
Just as you learned to unconsciously ‘choose’ panic, you can learn to ‘un-choose’ it. I use hypnotherapy, psychotherapy, NLP, and powerful ‘Inner Child Therapy’* to help you remove panic from your life for good.
First off… let’s relax you with hypnosis
Firstly, using hypnotherapy, and self-hypnosis, I can teach you how to bring your general levels of stress and anxiety down, meaning we can give you immediate physical relief from the symptoms of anxiety, including the physical sense of apprehension you may feel. You will learn how to slow your breathing; how to relax the muscles all around the body so that they can release their tension; encouraging you to switch off from conscious thoughts. I use hypnotherapy to encourage your unconscious mind to take charge temporarily, to protect you, to bring forth your naturally-occurring safety mechanisms that calm you down.
Secondly, we treat the cause, not the symptom
Using psychotherapy and NLP techniques for panic alongside hypnotherapy means together we can work out the triggers for your panic attacks and choose different behaviours to react to them. Using psychotherapy we can reprogram how you react to stressors or threats in future, preventing the anxiety (that leads to panic) altogether.
‘Maximum Strength’ therapy
Ultimately however, to completely wipe anxiety out of your life, you may need something more powerful; ‘Maximum Strength’ in fact. That’s where Inner Child Therapy* comes in. Using this approach, we find, target and remove deep-rooted, negative beliefs that are the cause of your anxiety and replace them with new, positive beliefs. The effect is to give you quick, lasting resolution to your anxiety: no more ‘talking-it-out-of-you’, or learning to cope. Instead, full resolution in months, even weeks. It can take as little as 10 x 2 hour sessions.
